
Jamaica Public Services (JPS) is a power utilities company serving the entire the country of Jamaica. JPS is looking to create an analytics platform that enables data-driven decision-making, providing actionable insights and empowering stakeholders to reduce losses, improve system reliability, and drive operational effectiveness.
The Challenge
JPS wants to increase operational efficiencies around planning, maintenance, and unplanned outage prediction. They expect to reduce losses by creating a better tracking generation and consumption at all levels and to better understand customer use patterns to predict irregularities and pinpoint theft as it occurs. JPS also wishes to improve revenue retention by predicting and preventing breaches and increasing recovery.

Utilities are very technical in nature, to get a better understanding on how we wanted to display data, it was important to understand how the country of Jamaica operated and distributed power throughout the nation. I then took this data and design several iterations of wireframes to test and validate with the operations team in order to Identify the most highly literal way to describe the business problem with data.
As a result the burst of creativity was felt on both the operational and technical sides of the business. Once we achieved a baseline foundation of data literacy, in this case the national view of the power distribution and financial impact across the country of Jamaica, everyone could bring their own experience and expertise (and professional background) to data viz. Every department all innately had their own data stories to tell and new viewpoints rooted in critical thinking and narrative that add value to the goal of increasing profits.

Estimates: If JPS is not able to manually read meter, it will be estimated… at 3rd estimation , JPS is at breach which results in penalty.
Business Need: Minimize Estimations and irregularity
Solution: Track data points towards estimation of meter reading along with trends/frequency overlaid with history of losses to identify troublesome area.
Heat Map of Trouble Codes
Trouble Code: the reason an account was estimated because manual read did not work out.
EX: F87 -Meter Not Registering
Business Need: Indicate issue logged with reading the meter.
Solution: organized view based on priorities and geo focus.


Account Detail Card
Business Need: Consolidate the 10-13 different screens a user has to look through to get an accurate understanding of an accounts health.
Solution: Account detail card that aggregates details of an account and and organizes according to department's area’s of interest.
Mismatch Accounts
Mismatch Service:When the rate class does not match: Billing Rate does not equal Account Class + Service Class + Service Rate
Business Need: Need to identify and correct mismatch rate within 60 days on account before billing in order to recover any potential financial loss
Solution: have the system flag a mismatch as soon as it happened prior to first reading to prevent incorrect billing.
